What are blackheads ? where do they actually come from, what substance from our skin make them to sprout, these are the questions we usually ask our beautician or dermatologists. Blackheads are usually black or yellowish colored little bumps on your face, neck or any other body part; they are mostly found around nose and cheeks.

What blackheads are, actually misled for poor hygiene. Blackheads are made of hardened sebum (the oils from your pores), dirt, dead skin cells, and makeup. The reason why they are black is because sebum oxidizes from the atmospheric air and it makes them black in color. Blackheads truly are very unattractive as they appear black on skin.
There are multiple reasons for having blackheads, people having oily and combination skin are more prone to blackheads. Environmental pollution is also one of the major factors in developing blackheads. People living in polluted areas where smoke and dust level is higher in atmosphere likely to have more blackheads. When proper cleanliness is not maintained, the blackheads seem to get worsened. The extensive use of skin-care and make-up products is the next big culprit for blackhead’s formation. Lots of make – up can build up block pores.
What are blackheads ? In medical term, an open comedo which is a wide opening on the skin with a blackened mass of dead skin covering the opening, like a lid to a treasure. Despite their name, some blackheads can be yellowish in color. A comedo is a widened hair follicle which is filled with skin debris (keratin squamae), bacteria and oil (sebum).
Blackheads start appearing when we reach at puberty as our hormones rush to the upper level of our skin which is called epidermis. The presence of higher levels of hormones in the skin layer triggers the stimulation of the sebaceous glands, which produce oily substances for our skin. The sebaceous glands produce too much oil in the pores, which accumulates and gets stuck. When the gathered oil is exposed to air it becomes black.

Sebum prevents skin from dehydrating simply. Excess of sebum makes our skin and hair oily and ultimately makes it smells and stink as this oils stales. A blackhead can develop into a pimple, which is also known as a papule or pustule, again an ugly thing.
